One of the most powerful techniques I used as a writing teacher was to do my students’ writing assignments with them. A Note About Process: Write With Your Students Meanwhile, we’re still teaching students the craft of narrative writing. If we aren’t too restrictive about what we call these pieces, and we talk about different possibilities with our students, we can end up with lots of interesting outcomes. For example, I could write about my grandmother’s experience of getting lost as a child, but I might write it in her voice. A student might tell a true story that happened to someone else, but write it in first person, as if they were that person.
